Here is another commission for my Bro Pablo. He loves green lantern, and red lantern, and orange lantern and yellow lantern etc. I know all about Martian Manhunter, but I wasn't totally familiar with the whole white lantern thing, apparently it raises superheroes from the dead and makes them kind like zombies....I guess. Anyway. Hope ya dig it. Color for Thor, Deadpool, Abe Sapien and this guy should be up in the next week.

So my pal Tom Fiester who has been doing some spectacular work on IDW's GiJoe covers emails me and he says in so many words, J, I'm digging this nightwing, but I think you could make it better and here's how and proceeds to give me some great tips on punching up the power of this pinup. He even takes what I originally posted and manipulates it in photoshop to show me what he's wanting. I spent the better part of my downtime yeasterday making the changes and I like how it came out. So here are the redone lines.

Been Drawing some Hellboy stuff inbetween commissions. Just some extra last minute stuff for the sketchbook Trying to get a few more mainstream characters in there. I drew a lot of obscure characters this year and I think the book could benifit from some of the heavy weights. This will be the cover image for my 2010 conbook. I'll have these on sale for $10 with a free headsketch in the front for any fans that want to pick one up. I think that is a pretty good deal for forty pages of art and a head sketch. I think this one turned out pretty good, though per usual I'll hate it in about two weeks which is right when I'll have them printed and be feeling like I came up short on this. Still as drawing spiderman goes, he's such a tough character for me that I have to be a little proud of this one right now. I've posted it with and without the cover text.

Red Lantern Guy Gardner Commission

Ok, so apparently all hell has broken loose in the Green Lantern Titles. Some storyline called Blackest Night where every color in the rainbow now has a lantern ring. Some will live, some will die and some should die. Guy Gardner has apprently given in to the dark side and now has a red ring and a green ring. Know what happens when you mix those two colors, neutral right, or turd brown. Still, Guy is a cool character and this seems like a good opportunity for him to raise the ruckus we always knew he was capable of. Red lanterns are fueled by rage so I wanted to play on that and show just how dangerous an out of control Guy Gardner could get with a ring induced Gattling Gun. Colors to come.

That's a big gun you have there Mr. Kraven perched on your roof hunting spiders. I had a good time with this one and I'm still motivated to draw more of spidey's rogues gallery. I posted two versions to get your opinion on. One has a glow around the entire figure, the other just has the glow around the lion. Not sure which I like more.I have more Baddie Goodness coming your way soon. Now who do I want to draw next?

So it was real close this morning when I checked my Deviant Art Poll for which spidey villain the people who pay attention to me on there wanted to see. The top two votes I was getting were for Kraven and Rhino followed by Venom and Hobgoblin. Seems like nobody appreciates the classics like Electro, the Vulture and Sandman anymore. Oh Well, this one was a lot of fun, though he might feel a little wanky. I tried to push the perspective just about as far as I dared to rally emphasize those horns on his head. Colors coming soon.

I had so much fun working on that Carnage that I decided to draw some more of my favorite villains from Spidey's Rogues Gallery. I really like Spideys enemies and I like drawing them. He's the only character in my opinion who has a cast of baddies that can compete with Batman, and I think if I were forced to pick the better of the two, today I'd have to say I dig Spidey's more. Anyway, I'm gonna start coloring this now and hopefully I'll have a new color illo by late tonight.

Carnage Commission

This one ended up being a lot of fun. Brian Ballengee whom I met at Megacon Last weekend picked up a sketchbook from me along with his Pal Pablo and apparently they've felt like testing my drawing chops on some of the more obscure characters in the Marvel and DC universes. I know Carnage was on pretty much every cover Marvel put out 10 years ago but after whatever happened to him, he's been relatively left in comic limbo until Brian resurrected him last thursday as his commission. I never had much affinity for the character and for the most part, I really quit liking venom when marvel went Symbiote crazy but this guy was a lot of fun to draw and I'm pretty happy with the results. I did end up making some minor changes from the line art to the final colors. He was a little complicated and convoluted in the initial sketch so I simplified some of the drips and drool. Hope you guys like it. I'm had fun drawing a spidey villain. I think I'll do another one soon.

Here is another quick Captain Marvel Sketch to help me sharpen up before the Madness that is megacon. I'll be heading down early in the morning. I've always loved Megacon. It was my first comic convention, I've made some great friends there and I have a lot of great memories. If you've never been you really should check it out. It is for the most part very family friendly with lots of great artists and other celebritites walking around and doing work for a modest fee.

So I've been away for a while and now I know what its like when your blog says you haven't posted for 3 months. I used to wonder how people could let themselves go like that. Oh well...

So I needed some time away to recharge my batteries and get my head on straight again. 2009 was a great year for me art wise but a lot of other things suffered and I just wasn't feeling like spending time in the studio after the Iron Man cards.

I drew this Batman today because when I can't draw anything else, I can always bust out a batman to shake the cobwebs loose. Hope to have colors before bed time tomorrow.

He asked me for a Commission of Vash the Stampede about two weeks ago. These are the lines with colors soon to follow. I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of Anime, but it is starting to grow on me. Luckily I found a few episodes on Youtube and I was able to kinda get the idea of what the character was all about. These are the colors that I finally got around to after finishing up some work. Part of my 13 deviations in 8 weeks challenge where I'll post thirteen more illustrations either in black and white or color within the next two months. This was one of the five character requests by a follower over on deviant art as part of my 1500 pageviews. I'd planned to do something similar ever 500 page views but I'm not fast enough to keep up with it so I think I'll do another one at 10,000 page views. Either way, I still owe him a danny phantom and his original charcter and I'll get to those eventually. In the meantime I have a trigun piece in the works and possibly something else. So I finally finished the colors on this piece. Took way longer than I planned and when it was all said and done I probably made about 20 cent an hour but he was fun, I have feel like I have a fairly nice little illustration done. This was a commission for Garan Madieros [link]I'm currently working on a 4 page backup story for Garan's Book Contract that I'll be doing pencils inks and colors on. This was a little warm up commission that he hired me for. Hope you guys like it. This is a commission for a buddy of mine, Garan Madieros, who writes a comic called contract who I'll also be doing a four page story for, and handling all the art chores for it except writing and lettering. This will be my first attempt at penciling inking and coloring a whole story. I'm excited and scared senseless at the same time. The good news is that Garan is giving me a flexible deadline and he wrote a script to my perceived strengths so hopefully, we'll put out a product that we can both be proud of, but more importantly something fans will enjoy. This guy is one of Garan's Charcters, his name is panzer. He has superstrength and he's somewhat of a poonhound. Ultimately he's just a man's man with a German accent and a cybernetic arm. Garan wanted me to show that he had super strength so this was my best effort. Hope you guys like it. I'm looking forward to jumping into the coloring on it asap.

Meet Floberk

This is floberk. Floberk was created by Braeden Penberg. Braeden was nice enough to commisson this from me a couple weeks ago and he's just an all around cool guy. From what I understand, Floberk is an intergalactic Mixed Martial Arts champion who's real power is his ability to suck things into the doorway that is installed in his belly button.

I never got around to uploading the lineart for this one last night mostly because I really wasn't happy with it. I think the color helps but it is still the weakest of the eight illos I did for this gig. Just the same, the publisher liked her so I went with her anyway. I've had a blast on this job and I hope to get more of this kind of work in the future.

Finished these up last night. He's got two equally strong light sources on him coming from slightly different directions so he was a little difficult to color. Hope I got it right. It made for some tough shadows to interpret.

Nazi Propaganda Poster Additional Versions.

So, guess what. I obviously don't speak German. What's more, you can't depend on those online translators to get it right either. The one I used actually invented a word I guess, because a guy on Deviant art called me out this morning....in german. So being the resourceful guy that I am and using the resources at my disposal, I enlisted the help of my former Tennis Coach and our current German Teacher at my School to translate the phrases into actual german. Here are the new posters. The words a little longer than the ones I initially got, so I don't get the luxury of that nice big "Sturma" in contrast to the other text. These are the best arrangements I could make for the text.

So here are the colors for this piece. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. All that armor made for a lot of surfaces to deal with but I think he's one of the better ones from this set. Hope you guys like it.

And this is the propaganda poster I made. It hasn't been approved yet for the final print, but I'm hoping it will. I may have to tweak the font, but I'm digging how he layed over that textured background. I was influenced by the Contemporary Army Of One Recruitment ads the Army has been doing. I did my graduate unit for my teaching degree on propaganda and I learned quite a bit about it during that time. The US was actually the first country to create an office strictly for the production of propaganda. It was created under Woodrow Wilson during World War I. Hitler just took all that he could from the way we'd been using it and the way the Roman Catholic Church used it and he elevated it to the next level, convincing a whole country that it was cool to kill six million people. It is dangerous stuff and we've got 10 times as many ways to be exposed to it today as they has back during the 40's. Watch out.Also the text says "A Nations Pride" "Join the Storm Soldiers" "For the Mother Land"

So how fitting is it that my 100th post would also be a drawing of my first boobie girl that I actually took to the level of completed illustration in god knows how long. Two versions of her. Her personality is that of a butch nazi spy dominatrix kinda gal. You know the type, the ball busting blonde with slight lesbian undertones. The first version I did said all of that but I think she looks a lottle androgenous. I softened the brow and the nose up on the second one and I think that is the one I'll end up coloring. Anyway, here's to hitting 1000 entries and drawing alot more boobie girls that are much better than this one. The top version is the one that I settled on, though I think the publisher still wants some tweaks. Garry brought it to my attention that she looked like a cyclops in the other two.

This is a character named Hoss from Cartoon Network's Undefist. I watched a little bit of the Halloween special last night on Youtube. It's alright. Neat characters but the typical watered down ren and stimpy humor cartoon network is all about.

He was a pain in the butt to draw, & I bet I sketched him 30 to 40 times before I finally found some joy. I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out. I see a few tweaks here and there that I need to make but overall I'm glad he's drawn. Hopefully I can work on some colors today but this is a thick week for me with work so we'll see.

A fixed version of Samurai Jack

This illo has been very popular over at Deviant art but one of the minor criticisms I've had on it come from Robert Atkins who informed me of the anatomy of a Katana Sword. Apparently, and I hadn't even considered this, the diamonds and embellishments that are on the handle of the sword are on the flat side with the blade. In the original illo they were a little off which made it look like he was screwing the handle onto the sword. This is the kind thing I think that separates pros from amateurs like me. I don't think that drawings need to be filled with detail but I do think the details you put in should atleast be accurate so thanks to Robert for the heads up. Here is the fixed version.

Alright, before you lay into me about why the hell I drew a character called El Tigre, let me explain. See, last friday I was getting pretty close to 1500 page views over at my Deviant Art Page and I wanted to go ahead and push things over the edge so I came up with a little contest where by who ever was the first to comment after I hit 1500 page views would win the chance to boss me around for my next five illustrations by getting to choose who I drew. So I put the contest in my Journal and went beddy bye for the evening. The next morning I woke up to find that not only had I surpassed 1500 page views, but that the winner was one of my more loyal watchers Superplayer J. He's waited dilligently for the numbers to pile up and BOOM! 1500 pages views fell like a ton of bricks.

So I emailed him and told him he'd won and that he should send me a list of 5 characters he'd like me to draw. Now in my experience, certain characters are bound to fall if you give someone a chance to make requests in comics. I figured I'd get a Batgirl, maybe a Harley or Poison Ivy, probably a hellboy. On the otherhand, I figured, maybe this guy would shoot the moon and I'd get some obscure Anime that I'd have to scour google to find reference of and then i'd get the Batgirl, Harley, Hellboy and Batman. Nope. Superplayerj is a conosieur of all things comics and he posted one of the most eccentric and out of left field lists of characters I'd ever encountered. Not since the days of Scuba Steve and Rouphie have I see a list of requests like this and Mr. El Tigre here happened to be one of them. So here he is, in all his glory waiting on some chromatic enhancement from yours truly to make him sing take me out to the bullfights.

So this one goes out to one of the only three fans of the character Black Manta that I know of... my good buddy Will Black. He's consumed with all things Aquaman and Underwater so that means he has to like Black Manta as well. This is the lineart. Not so impressive I guess, but as I said with the Bizarro Post, I'm pushing myself to simplify some and abstract the figure down. This leaves them looking flat, but color and shape are then used to create the form.

This guys nearly killed me. We've been duking it out for the last 4 hours or so. I wasn't digging him so much when I initially started coloring but I think he turned out ok in the final product. I don't know though, my eyes are blurring right now. It's 12:30 am and I have to teach tomorrow.

The pin stripes were tough, but that frigging rope, made me want to hang myself with it.

Woke up late for school today. Got ready and drove to school in 13 minutes. I'm the flash, only I look and feel like crap now.

Garry gave me the heads up on what I was already thinking that forground and background were awkward with the same depth of field applied so I adjusted this. It brings to light the real downfall of working in this method in that Illustrator doesn't have a lot of versatility or variety when it comes to blur filters etc. If anyone knows where I can download more SVG filter plug ins for Photoshop, Let me know. I desparately need them.

Shwann Commission Colors

So I finally finished this one up. I'm pretty ok with it. Hope the guy who commissioned it is too. I'm gonna focus on sequentials for a while so I don't know how often I'll be posting but I need to get my interiors chops back up to par. I've got a feeling it is going to be big year for me between now and next august. At least I'm praying that will be the case. I don't know how many of you believe in God. I hope you all do and I want you to know that I've only recently begun to pray for his help in my career and he's showered blessings on me. Give it a try sometime. Until next time, I love you guys.

Monster Inks

So these are the final lines inked for the Monster Illo I started yeasterday at Dine and Draw. If you compare them to the sketch you'll find that I made quite a lot of changes and pretty much drew the grass in illustrator. I've found that a lot of my decisions are made when i'm working in this program much the same way they were when I was doing traditional inks. Except with illustrator, my confidence is increased as a result of that nifty little Control Z shortcut. I'm waiting for the day to come when I have to replace a laptop because the Z button quits working. Color to come on this but for now I'm off to work on Cherry Bomb.

Monster pencils

Here are some pencils from Dine And Draw yeasterday in Savannah with Garry and Mike. We're hoping to or atleast I'm hoping to make this a regular monthly event in Savannah.

I'll be doing a step by step with this piece going through the process that I use.

There are a couple steps before this one including finding time to draw, finding inspiration, figureing out what I'm going to draw and so on but I don't have anything to post for those steps.

Once all that is taken care of I get to step one which is taking pencil to paper and sketching. In this case, the character what a challenge from Garry. "Draw Frankensteins Monster" he says. "Ok" says I. 15 minutes later you get this little sketch.

Snakeyes Adjusted

Here is Snake Eyes again with a slight color adjustment. In the previous pic, the yellow and red were more heavily saturated. Here I've reduced some of that. I was told and I agree that the original colors were a little heavy handed. The yellow and red were overpowering the blues of Snakeyes. With a primary color scheme, all three colors are competeting for your attention. Additionally, they sit in specific locations in space when used together. The yellow would be the equivalent of the forground, the red would fall in the middle ground and the blue would recede into the background. Here I'm trying to do the opposite. Color Theory is an animal all on its own and there are guys that I've seen that make it sing beautifully everytime. I'll leave it to you to decide which you like better.hope you're all well.

Here are those Snakeyes colors. Maybe they're done, maybe not. Can you say pain in the butt to color. Cause I can. Still fun though. I was shooting for a split comp color scheme but because of the nature of his colors I'm getting a primary scheme goin as well. Oh well, both make for dynamic which is what this called for.

I'm off to hang with my bro Garry McKee today in Savannah. Maybe we'll find some time to sketch while we're slacking. Maybe, something good will come from that sketch time....probably not. We are talking about former members of Jugendstil Studios. Which as James and John H will both tell you means Jugend still be waiting for a sketch. Hope you guys are well.

Oh, by the way, I wasn't really happy at all with my initial composition for the inks. Garry called me out on it and I revised the composition. I reverted to 12th grade again where every square inch had to have something in it. I like this better.

Trying Not to Crap Out...I rolled Snake Eyes

So G.I.Joe will be in theaters in a few weeks and while I'm almost 100% sure that it will suck, I went ahead and hammered out a Joe Character Sketch. Yup, call me a captialist if you will, I still believe in making money and I think these characters will be hot at Megacon In August. Now, I realize that our current prince and his band of merry morons are hellbent on converting our country to a socialist economy, but I'll still fight the power until our dollar is about as valuable as the rupies you find when you cut the grass in the legend of Zelda. My grass has gotten pretty tall, so I expect that when they finally succeed, I'll be rockefeller rich in a country of poor, starving sheep who buried thier heads in the sand while the Constitution was used as toilet paper. I wish there was a Real American Hero like G.I.JOE. We sure as hell need one.

Ok, now that that is out of my system... I had a hankering to take on a Joe Character, though I have to admit, that G.I. Joe and Rainbow bright are probably the last projects I'd ever pursue. I wouldn't want to draw Rainbow Bright because she sucks and Drawing G.I. Joe just intimidates the heck out of me. All those toys with the cool designs. I'm afraid I couldn't do them justice in the grand scheme of a month.

By the way, Sorry for the long abscence guys. I have been drawing, lots of projects distracting me. I just drew this last night so I could actually update my blog. I hope you guys are good. I'll throw some color on this guy later today.

Public Enemies and the 4th of July.

Hey Guys

Just Caught Public Enemies with the wifey yeasterday! Great movie. Well written and beautifully shot. It's a little long and while It isn't Die Hard action packed 4th of July fun, it is still worth seeing. It was great to get hollywoods version of this story since I only really had a vague understanding of these characters.

I havn't got anything new to post today but I do have the colored version of Beastboy to throw up so hopefully that will tide you guys over.

Seeing the movie yeasterday has me with Gangsters on the brain so I'm going to pull my own gangster concept out of the mothballs that it has been sitting in since early 2006 and working on it again. Some of you might remember it "Uncle Paulies Nuts." Mike had some luck with Cartoon Network last year which makes me think that maybe I could too. Anyway, I'll hopefully post a new illo monday or tuesday depending on how much I can work this evening and tomorrow. We're going to the inlaws for the fourth.

Summer is running away

Alright, So I started off on fire and now I've miss a few days in a row. I have been drawing but I've had a lot of not comics projects going on that have to be cleared out so I can focus again. In the mean time I'm posting this Hawkman that I did shortly before the con. I was trying to get a very forced perspective look with this and it didn't quite work out so his head ended up looking a little humongous. Oh well, he is a bit of an egomaniac.

Summer is counting down and I am not looking forward to another 180 days of managing students. I've got to get some serious relaxation in in these next few weeks or I'm done for. I don' t feel like I've decompressed at all.

Lots of cool art on the walls. My stuff is hanging there cause my mom got ahold of a couple of my prints from last year and framed em. I'm planning to fill this frames with some original pages I got way back in 2000 eventually. That is stelfreeze, cheeks and Tom Biondolillo hanging on the walls in front of me.

Lots going on. I'm finally getting my workspace situated after the new furniture. I just added a new drawing table to my desk. I had a wonderful large drawing table that my amazing father built for me way back around the time I turned 21 or so. I've used it for 10 years now and i loved it but it was a little too bulky for the room with the new desks so with much sadness I've retired it to the mothballs until Crystal and I can buy or hopefully build a larger house with a bigger room for my studio space at which time I'll gladly bring it back. We are till in the market for some bookshelves. My wife is a former English teacher and at one point she was an avid reader so she has collected quite a bit of the major literature of the world, and I'm constantly buying books on design or drawing or animation to learn from. We've got enough books to start a small very specilized library. I've posted a few pics of the new workspace along with the Kid Flash which I'll be printing out today to remind me to draw faster and get more work done. I've also started working on the batman pages I posted yeasterday again. I'm planning to finish this story if it take me the rest of the summer.

Kid Flash was always a fun character for me. I'll include him in the teen titans print I'm working on.

Time To get moving again...

This week has been a complete waste creatively. I havn't gotten anything drawn for all the distractions and things that I needed to catch up on after I neglected my life for the better part of three weeks getting ready for the convention this past weekend. I often wonder how those guys who put on the conventions feel on the weekend after the show. What the heck do we do now. Well I know... so far this week I've had to spend two days grading work, another day just straightening up the studio. We bought new furniture for it with the spoils from the con and that has been an issue all by itself with Staples having given up the wrong color of one of the desks. We have finished the studio for now and I'm very proud of it. It's growing into the work space that I have always dreamed of having, sans the full glass wall that opens into a 3o'x30' deck that overlooks the lake. Don't have that yet.

I also got the Deviant Art page set up and that is a learning curve all on its own. Plus I've had tennis and softball commitments. Friday is my day to do some work....hopefully.

I'm posting something new/old today. I've had these pages sitting in mothballs for about 6 months now. They are four pages of sequentials from a batman short story I've had banging around in my head for years now. I began to lose my zeal for them after I started noticing all the inconsistencies in them. I think the storytelling is pretty solid but some of the individual illos are a little weak. I think I'll start on a new set next week to get my Sequential work moving again.

The crazy thing is that I love sequential storytelling. I like the opportunities it presents to work with design how much fun it is to solve that puzzel and make the page flow so that it reads well. I used to draw pages all the time. I got a little burned out and the spot illustration bug bit me. I was dipping my toe with these. I think it's time to take the plunge.

Hey Guys,

It's four days in a row now. I'm finally finding my strength again after a weekend of meeting greeting, selling and definitely smelling at Heroes Con. Of course I'm a little sick. You can't shake that many hands without getting the gunch at somepoint. Gonna wear latex gloves and a breather next year.

So I finally took the Deviant Art Plunge at the urging of my bud Randy Green. I was fortunate enough to be invited to join Tsunami Studios about five years back and while I'm still not sure why that talented group of cats wanted me, I'm grateful for the opportunities it has presented, not the least of which is getting to know those guys. The stuff they are doing and the levels they've built their careers up to make me feel like a fraud whenever I'm hanging out with them at the shows. Gonna try to make up for that eventually guys, but in the meantime thanks for being pals and for the support and advice you give. It was great seeing you at heroes this weekend.

I might just do another one. Of course people were quick to point out that because of his healing factor he really wouldn't need to block bullets. The man without fear (of returning stuff to Staples)

As promised, lots of new stuff to post. Gonna take updating slow cause I've finally built up a breathing room with the amount of material I have and for some reason I just can't catch up on my rest after Heroes Con. It was a good time, but I've had a constant headache since and I feel very sleepy all the time.

Plus my Studio is a wreck right now. Crystal and I decided to invest the majority of the booty from my conquest at Heroes into new furniture for the studio. This new furniture consists of two new glasstop metal framed desks that we hoped would fit together nicely in there. Right now I'm typing at one of them, a desk that I've always imagined having where I could work. It's black with a minimalistic approch to the construction. It is one of those that wraps around the wall in an L shape. It's a sexy piece of furniture. My wife also sews a little so we'll be setting up her sewing machine pretty soon. I rarely work at the drawing table anymore so we both needed some table space that didn't swallow the room. The other desk we bought is from the same line. It consists of a glass top desk with a stand attached that holds printers and scanners etc. It's not put together right now cause the gang over at staples didn't pay attention and gave us a silver version of it instead of the black. So I have to drive back to savannah to exchange it. I'll post some pics of the studio once I get it finished. It's my favorite room in the house and it gets better (and a little more crowded everytime we add something.

I've posted a Daredevil that I did several years ago in the very early phases of my style change. I recently revised him to make him a little less googly and poorly drawn to include in the sketchbook. Hope you like it. See ya tomorrow.

Finally An Update.

Hey Guys,

So it has been a minute or two since I updated. Actually, it's been 47 days. My Bad!!! I have actually been working so I'll be posting some new stuff here. I teach high school and up until recently I've not had a need to pay for internet at home as I could use it at the school. I took the hit last week and purchased some service for my home. What all this means for you is that I can start managing my blog again over the summer while I'm not teaching.

First things first, I just got back from Heroes con this weekend. What a great show and a great weekend for me. I met a lot of cool people, had some good talks with some pros that I really admire and got to do a little sketching. The printed version of my sketchbook was successful as were the prints. It was a great time. I always enjoy Charlotte and Heroes and I'll be going for as long as they'll have me.

I added the new header to the blog so I thought my first update would be the art that went along with that. This Hellboy flew out of the pencil and I had a blast working on him last week as I was getting ready for the con. I have a lot of stuff to put up and new projects on the way. I'm also going to start posting more sketches between the finished illos. So here is Hellboy.

Yeah, remember that old line. Well this is superman sitting there takeing a split second to ponder whether he really wants to save a pain in the butt like Lois. Just a rough to get me warmed up. He needs tweaking.

By the way, I just purchased a few books from amazon with some extra money that came in this month. Two of them are Volumes 1 and 2 of "Drawn to Life" 20 golden years of Disney master Classes by Walk Stanchfield. Now for those not in the know as I was before I stumbled across these books, Stanchfield was an animator that worked for disney for about 40 years on everything from the adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad to the Great mouse Detective. During this time the artists at disney would come into these life drawing classes that he ran draw from the model. Stanchfield would lead these classes and teach the students how to push and pull their drawings to get the most expression out of them. The first volume I got is pretty amazing. It's mostly about gesture so there isn't a lot of traditional eye candy in it, but the insight this guy has is phenomenal. I've only encountered a few people like this guy in my life. People who are so incredibly competent at their craft and so in love with it that they spend 90 % of their thinking time solving problems and refining their understanding of that craft. In school, I had a professor named Bruce Little and In Comics I've seen Brian Stelfreeze. These three men really know what they are doing. They have a reason behind every decision they make. I admire that. Anyway, these books are fairly cheap. I'd recomend them to anyone who really wants to learn more about storytelling with the figure. I need all the help I can get.

Another Baddie

Baddie is right, I rushed this one out earlier this week and havn't really been able to come back to it, but I wanted to get something up on the blog this week. April has been kinda slim for me posting and I'm sorry for that, especially after march was so productive. Things will be easing up for me now hopefully. Tennis concluded Tuesday with a heartbreaking loss ot Fitzgerald. Seriously, going to places like that puts things in perspective. They have telephone poles in the spaces between the courts to hold up the lights. I've never seen something as poorly thought out as this decision. I think it certainly hurt us and gave the other team a real home court advantage. My boys had to dodge the poles while they were playing and on two occasions when they were there to hit the ball back, the ball hit these poles. Now you say, the other team had to deal with them as well, and yes they did, but playing on those courts everyday gives them a bit of an advantage. Oh well, It was a good season and a great experience coaching those 7 guys. They're off to bigger and better things I'm sure.

so here is the Green Goblin. Maybe I'll have a redo on him since the basic drawing is done now. A little tweak here, an adjustment there, he might fly yet.

Yep, this one was fun from the beginning. I havn't really every drawn a successful penguin. Maybe I still havn't but this came pretty easily just the same. Maybe I'll do a few more baddies between now and heroes con for the Sketchbook.

So one week until the Summer Movie Season Hits full steam. Wolverine, Star Trek, and Terminator Salvation will all dip into my bank account next month, more good stuff coming after that. And don't forget that September 9, 2009, the animated Movie "9" comes out. I don't really know the story, but the Animation and Character design looks awsome and it's directed or produced or something by Timbur Bekmambetov Sp? of Wanted and Daywatch fame. Between then, GI Joe and Transformers, plus another superhero movie or two. Gonna be a good expensive summer.

Been trying to draw but with the news of the baby, my mind has been reeling trying find my footing and get my ducks in a row, though everyone tells me I never will get everything completely lined up. Plenty of artists have had babies before and while my mind is anxious for the little guy to get here so I can breath a sigh of relief, I know that I've got a long 9 months ahead of me.

Another X-MAN From the print

So I've been way too busy lately to draw which sucks because I was really enjoying being able to do that again. Mondays and Tuesdays are pretty much out of the question with this new work that is coming in. Money is good though. Today is Tax Deadline. Hope you all got lots of money back from the new Regime. Don't know if we'll continue to get much back the way they are spending it without regard for sanity or accountability. Atleast the little I did get back didn't go to support a bunch of lazy freeloaders or 400 dollar toilet seats. Hope you are all well.

I've posted Banshee from the X-men print. He's pretty small in the composition so he didn't get as much detail as the figures in the forground. I've always liked this character. They were using him alot when I started reading comics back around X-men # 275.

That should actually read, finally, something actually worked out as I've been trying to draw all week now. I don't know what has been up, but I havn't been feeling it this week. Just tired I guess. One more class and I'll have a week without my students.

This needs work and I may repost. Traditionally, Captain America and other masked figures have been difficult for me to draw. Lots of sketches in my sketchbook later, this guys came out.

OK, so I'm not feeling like such a BAMF especially since I havn't posted since friday. Nothing new to post today either. Been busy with some new work that just started up monday. Here is a nightcrawler that I did back before christmas as part of a larger illustration. Just something to tide you over until I get warm up my drawing engine again.

Spring Break is next week. Thank the good lord. I havn't had any real time off since Christmas and these kids are getting ridiculous. 6 more weeks and I can have a summer vacation for the first time since I started this teaching madness.

So here is the next in my series of teen titans. Two versions of boy wonder, cause the fist out in front didn't really work for me without something in it. I rushed through this drawing because my schedule is crazy busy the next few days. Maybe I'll find time to draw the incredima hulk at some point. Probably not a lot of posting between now and monday.

Man you just beasted on him.

Being A school teacher, I get hit with new teenage slang just about everyday. I've mananged to assimilate some of it into my vocabulary while selectively avoiding other examples. I've also managed to take a few things back from the slang of previous Generations. For example, I use JIVE and DIG much the same way they were used in the generations before me and for the most part I've seen some of my students begin to use them as well over the last three years. That being said two of the more recent examples that my tennis players are using include Coke or Cokeing (Both of which are used as verbs) and Beast beasted, or beasting the first of the three being used both as a verb and a noun while the last two up to this point are strictly verbs, but anything is possible. To coke someone is to rule them, to outdo them so severly that those around them who witness the "coking" feel sorry for them or pity them. An example would be to win a service game in a tennis match with just your serve. Another example would be to tackle a player in a football game so hard that his helmet flies off. You got coked if this has happened to you. If you are the one who does the "coking" then you could be referred to as a "Beast" in that you "beasted" on the guy you served the aces to. The act of doing this is referred to as "Beasting." It can also be used like the following sentance. "Man, you were beasting on that kid!"

Some other gems I've heard lately from my studio mate include the mantra for the rising generation of american students "I ain't did nuttin" and "ooh can had dat" and my favorite piece of jargain that refers to a person who needs a haircut "Man, you ain't got no edges."

Whatever....here is beastboy. I need a coke. Save your money, tomorrow looks bleak.

Teen titans go

It's amazing how much Japanese Animation has saturated our artistic culture. Characters like the Titans really have never held their own until they took them and put big googly eyes on them and put them on Cartoon Network. When I showed this to one of my students earlier today, he freaked out and really couldn't believe I'd draw a character like Cyborg. I was digging this character way back when the Kenner Super Powers Toyline and Cartoon were on TV and in Stores. I lost my affinity for him over the years and not I see green when I'm drawing him. Hoping that the Titans Print I have in mind will garner me enough Dough to pay for a steak or two this summer at the cons. I did the initial sketch of him in practically no time but the inks took a little longer once I'd actually gotten him scanned.

Hope you guys dig. I'll probably get all the titans I plan to include in this illo done before I color them so I can keep the colors and lighting consistant. Next up, probably Beast Boy or Changeling as they called him back in the day when kids were smart enough to understand what that meant.
