Conan Inks over Fridolfs

So my pal Derek Fridolfs posted this sweet rough sketch of Conan last night that has several people on Deviant Art going nuts including me. I asked if I could take it on out to conclusion and he agreed to let me have at it so here are the inks. I need to do a little tweaking here and there. I should have colors pretty soon. If you don't know his work, he's most famous for inking Batman Streets of Gotham over Dustin Nguyen but he's a heck of a cartoonist too. Check him out at
Hope you guys are well.

Cooler Bizarro

Another suggestion from Krayola, to push the reds more toward the violets. I thought I'd done this but in comparison I see that I hadn't. So here it is. A cooler colored Bizarro.

Darker Bizarro

Had several requests for a darker version of this. When Krayola says change the colors I have to take him seriously. Hope you guys dig it too.

Black Manta Colors

See what I told ya. Hope this measures up. It's hard to make this character cool or interesting.... or heterosexual.

Black Manta LInes

So this one goes out to one of the only three fans of the character Black Manta that I know of... my good buddy Will Black. He's consumed with all things Aquaman and Underwater so that means he has to like Black Manta as well. This is the lineart. Not so impressive I guess, but as I said with the Bizarro Post, I'm pushing myself to simplify some and abstract the figure down. This leaves them looking flat, but color and shape are then used to create the form.

Colors coming soon... like in the amount of time it takes me to upload another post.

hope you guys are well.

Bizarro Colors.

Here he is in all his pastel glory. He was much easier to color than my previous endeavours. I may go with a more saturated version of him as well. Let me know what ya think.
Maybe this is the start of a legion of doom print.
Hope You're well.

Bizarro, experiment

Hey Guys,

Just experimenting with abstracting the figures down even more. Not sure if this is working yet, but I'm gonna try to move in this direction for a while and see what happens.

hope you are all well.

Scarecrow Colors

This guys nearly killed me. We've been duking it out for the last 4 hours or so. I wasn't digging him so much when I initially started coloring but I think he turned out ok in the final product. I don't know though, my eyes are blurring right now. It's 12:30 am and I have to teach tomorrow.

The pin stripes were tough, but that frigging rope, made me want to hang myself with it.

Hope you guys are doing well.

The Scarecrow

I've had this guy roughed out in my sketchbook for a few months now, but never got around to taking him to completion. Couldn't get motivated to work on anything that I needed to today so I pulled him out and figured I'd throw some inks on it and maybe some colors as well. Here are the lines.

Unfair Trade

An illustration from 2005 as part of a series that dealt with finding alternative fuel sources. This was at the beginning of gas prices shooting through the roof and my first encounter with gas shortages and lines at the pump. It was also at a time when I found out that my brother was going to have to go to Iraq.
Title Unfair Trade
Artist Jason Walker
Dimensions 13"x19"
Medium: Pen and Ink and Illustrator and photoshop on digital paper
Time: September 2005.

Contrasting Blurs.

Woke up late for school today. Got ready and drove to school in 13 minutes. I'm the flash, only I look and feel like crap now.

Garry gave me the heads up on what I was already thinking that forground and background were awkward with the same depth of field applied so I adjusted this. It brings to light the real downfall of working in this method in that Illustrator doesn't have a lot of versatility or variety when it comes to blur filters etc. If anyone knows where I can download more SVG filter plug ins for Photoshop, Let me know. I desparately need them.

Hope you are all well.

Shwann Commission Colors

So I finally finished this one up. I'm pretty ok with it. Hope the guy who commissioned it is too. I'm gonna focus on sequentials for a while so I don't know how often I'll be posting but I need to get my interiors chops back up to par. I've got a feeling it is going to be big year for me between now and next august. At least I'm praying that will be the case. I don't know how many of you believe in God. I hope you all do and I want you to know that I've only recently begun to pray for his help in my career and he's showered blessings on me. Give it a try sometime. Until next time, I love you guys.
The first is just a detail and the last two differ in that one has a blur and the other doesn't. Didn't have a preference so I uploaded all three.
take your pick.

Shwann Commission

I got this commission off of deviant art about a week ago. It's been pretty fun. Can't wait to get it colored. I'll probably rework the composition for a daredevil print after I finish this one so I can have something to sell later on in the year at the cons.

Hope you guys are well. Sorry for the delay with my posts. Life is too dang busy these days.
