Better Version of Lord Grimshaw

So here is another version of the Oddysey Universe's Jungle Character Lord Grimshaw. Lots of influence from Disney's Tarzan movie from about 10 years back. Hard to believe that movie has been out for so long. That also means the matrix and the Mummy are about to have 10th anniversaries as well. Where did my 20's go.
1999 was a big year for me. I had my first work published, sometime that march. I attended my second MegaCon. I met my studio mates and best friends Garry and Mike, I returned to college with renewed dedication to finish my degree and I met my wife who finally decided to marry me about nine years after I met her. A crazy year and sitting here drawing this character it occurs to me how much has happened in this last decade.
So I've got a busy weekend ahead of me with the funeral and the tennis tournament. Probably won't be able to post colors until next week. I hope you're all well. Until next post

Grimshaw, nah, not quite.

So this was my first impulse for Grimshaw, Not tribal enough for me. Maybe this guy will just be a ticked off pirate I'll use for something else later. Not a bad sketch I think, just not the character I wanted him to be. I'll keep swinging
Hope you're all well.

Thursday Afternoon

Hey guys,

This hellboy represents my first attempt at doing an illustration completly in Illustrator. I had a lot of fun with this one and most of it was drawn completely in the computer. I'll have a full color print for sale at the cons this summer or you can order them by contacting me here on the blog. I may post the colors at some point but I'd like to save that for the show if I can help it.

In oddyssey news, I've begun doing sketches for Lord Grimshaw, a Tarzanesque character that exists in the world of Oddyssey. I'm envisioning a very lanky character so I'm struggling with the proportions and trying to keep him unified with the style of the book. Hopefully I'll have something to post for him tomorrow.
Also, lots of death around me these days. My wife's grandmother just passed away last night and my wife and her family are taking it pretty hard. She was a sweet old lady with a great sense of humor and it was my great honor to know her.
My former stepfather is also doing poorly. They don't expect him to last much longer. He was a tough old man, the guy that works for fun, farming and doing electrical work. He smoked for most of his life and the cigarettes caught up with him eventually. Fortunately, none of his children or grandchildren seam to have taken up that habit. All I have to say is if you were born after 1970 and you decided to start smoking, you're an idiot. There is way too much anti-smoking literature and information out there for you to have made an uninformed decision. Quit now.
For those of you that pray, please include both of these people. I'll catch up with you guys later.

How do you like me now Missuh Kee

yeah yeah, you were right. I was being a slacker.

Flyboy Colors

Here are the first draft colors for Flyboy. Hope you like. This guy is all about flying so I attempted to capture some of that personality in this illo. There are guys working in this industry that do this well. Brian Stelfreeze once told me to draw a character's attitude, not the character themselves. Easier said than done but I try Mr. Stelfreeze.

Hope you guys like.

This weekend was a pretty good one. I managed to squeak in a few movies off of netflix. Of course they all disappointed. Appaloosa, flirted with being a decent western but asside from a few lines that aren't even all that memorable two days later it failed to entertain. Then I tried to watch speedracer but after getting a headache from watching the movie shift forward and backwards in time every three seconds I turned it off. The Wachowski's definitly seem to have done their best work at this point.

Flyboy Lineart

Another Character From my upcoming project. Trying to capture my favorite aspects of the Rocketeer, Blackhawk and Adam Strange. Again, this is a first draft of the character so he will probably change some. Hope ya like, and maybe he'll be in technicolor by monday or so. Have a good weekend

Weird

For Some reason the blog inverted those colors below. But I kinda dig it. Here are the original colors.

Until Flyboy Gets Here

Hey Guys,

A happier Doc

Here he is all nicened up. Smile, Everybody likes you, you are a winner, instead of saying no, you are going to say Yes. The world is yours.....

Here are a few more versions of Doc. I was advised that he looked a little too grumpy and sinister with the shadow so I've lightened it and omitted it. I think that I'll play with that as the project develops. Were I to ever have enough time to tell the whole Oddysey story, I'd probably have a transition from a more youthful and fresh doc to a weathered and bitter doc as that is his story. I'm thinking the eyes may have something to do with the evil quality. I'm going for a Captain Marvel/Superman Squint but I Think it's reading as a glare. New faces to come.

Oddysey Colors

Here's the colored version. I like the black shapes of the pants without the detail of the anatomy but I'm not 100% on it yet. Next up is Flyboy.

Oddysey

Hey Guys,

Heres a first round design for a new project I'll be starting in the next few weeks. It's for a project my friends and Iare hoping to have ready within a couple summers from now. This is the main character called Oddysey.

I havn't posted much lately, but I have been drawing a good bit. Lots of sketches of this guy, trying to get the look and the proportions worked out. I'm not sure that he's 100% resolved but atleast it's something new.
I'm almost done with the colors and hopefully I'll post those tomorrow. Until then...

Hope you like.

Something from the Archives

Hey Gang,

Not much time for drawing this weekend, actually, I pretty much just hung out with the wife and played Guitar Hero: World Tour all weekend. I'm sure there are people who are able to get past easy on the drums, but I'm not one of them.

I did this wolverine as part of a larger X-men print that I'll have on sale at cons and through this blog. He'll probably show up in my sketchbook as well. He's actually one of the smaller elements on the print which measures 13x19 in full color and also features Cyclops, Banshee, Storm, Colossus and Night Crawler. So he's small but he's a lot of fun and I actually developed the print after I had this image in my head. Hope you like. As always, constructive criticism is appreciated.

THORough coloring

Hey gang,

Just finished slapping some color on the thor inks I posted a few days back. I'm sure a really good colorist could make this sing better than me, but I use what God Gave me.

I saw "Taken" this weekend. While I did enjoy the movie, it doesn't hold a lot of rewatchability for me. That being said, for a January/Pre Valentines Day movie, it wasn't bad. I've also seen some posters for the upcoming GIJoe movie. I hope this one is good. I really loved GIJoe when I was a kid. They way I see it, GIJoe will rock like the 3/4 inch action figures from the early 80's or it will suck like the Kung Fu grip that eventually killed the franchise. Either Way, I'll plan to be in theaters seeing it.
